How your sports club can win during Grand Final season
Sports fans around Australia are counting down to the NRL and AFL Grand Finals – is your club making the most of the opportunity? 

Since its humble beginnings in 1898, the AFL Grand Final has become one of the most anticipated events on the Aussie sports calendar – matched only by the NRL Grand Final. 

As the best of the best battle it out to be crowned Premiers, now is the best time to ramp up your sports club marketing campaign and win the competition for new members. 

Everyone’s a winner

It’s not just about footy and rugby: Australians is a nation of sports lovers, and we mean all sports. Research shows 71% of Australians participated in some form of sporting activity in 2014, rising to a massive 90% for ages 15 to 17. So whatever your code, make sure you tap into the Grand Final hype. 

Bonus Tip: Last year on Grand Final Eve, the Royal Geelong Yacht club held a croquet event and invited people to have a go for free. This is a great way to grab those people who want to try their hand at something different!

Host a Grand Final screening

Celebrate the best the sport has to offer, while at the same time raising money and membership for the club. If you have a clubhouse, invite people to a screening of the Grand Final. What better way to introduce people to your club and build a community? Run a sweepstake, raffles and spot prizes to get people engaged and create a buzz. 
Bonus Tip: Consider a cover charge for the event, with kids for free. Make sure people know this money goes to help support the club and how it will be used (e.g. clubroom maintenance, new kits, etc.). 

Target the local community

With the grand finals on everyone’s minds, now is the best time to raise awareness of your club. You don't have to have the budget of the Hawks to get results – letterbox advertising will help you reach the local community at a low cost. Simply stick to the few basic rules of flyer design for winning results.

Hold open days

Hold an open day and invite the local area to attend to find out what they’re missing out on. Show off the sports facilities with friendly competitions. Get your best players to provide mini-coaching sessions and tours. Team up with other local businesses, such as the local food truck or butchers for catering, and retail businesses for competition prizes. You might not be able to secure The Killers for your entertainment, but if there’s a local band, get them along too! 

Bonus Tip: Provide entertainment for kids, such as face painting and jumping castles, to show your club is a place for the whole family.
